What are gems?

In SuperCells Clash of Clans, Gems are the premium in-game currency used to advance players' villages. Upon starting the game players are provided with 500 gems (half of which you are forced to use during the tutorial with an additional 8 if you decide to rush buildings and troops when prompted). Additional gems can be earned in-game by completing Achievements, clearing Obstacles or purchased with real money.

How To use gems?

Gems can be used in several ways, from buying items, resources, instant finishes for troop training and construction. There are several items, that can only be purchased with Gems, such as the Pirate Flag, the Mighty Statue and Builder's Huts. Using gems to buy other Resources such as Gold, Elixir or Dark Elixir in varying amounts will help boost your troop development. Gems can be used to instantly finish the Troop training queues in Barracks and Dark Barracks. Gems can also be used to instantly complete the construction or upgrade of Buildings, or Troop upgrades in the Laboratory. Use Gems to speed up the production of Barracks or resource collectors such as Gold Mines, Elixir Collectors and Dark Elixir Drills for a period of time. Use gems to recover or increase healing rate of Heroes.

How to get more gems through achievements?

Complete achievements gives you rewards in the form of experience and gems. There are 66 achievements currently available in Clash of Clans. Achievements appear in the Game Center and on your player profile; each achievement gives you a set amount of Game Center points. Player's achievements (including overachievements) are made public via Game Center.

How to get more gems from obstacles?

Obstacles are plants and rocks that are randomly placed within your village. You start with approximately 40 obstacles around your village. Remove obstacles if you have a builder available and a small amount of elixir or gold. Gold is used to remove rocks and elixir to remove vegetation. Each obstacle that is removed will yield approximately 0-6 gems. On average, each obstacle cleared yields 2 gems. Clear vegetation repeatedly to increase your gem yield. Vegetation respawns one item every eight hours, except if all the spaces in your village are completely filled. Farm gems from your village obstacles with a maximum of 40 obstacles at one time within your village. Rocks don't respawn once removed from your village.
