Checkpoint Champion from Protostar is a stunt racing game played from an
overhead perspective. Players must drive through a series of
checkpoints culminating in a final golden checkpoint to win. However,
this isn't just a simple racing game, players will have to slide and
boost throughout increasingly difficult levels testing their mettle
against tight curves and tight timers.
The Good
This
game is extremely well made. From the icons, to the terrain and race
cars themselves, everything looks very crisp and consistent. There's
also a ton of social features implemented including Game Center
leaderboards for each level, and picture and video editing.
The Bad
There
are only two courses. Each challenge takes place on only a small
portion of the course, but players will eventually find themselves
getting board of the same old backdrop. The two-thumb control scheme can
be a bit hard to perform the tight turns and precise timing the game
expects from you especially when triggering the boost as it requires the
player to move both thumbs forward which can result in the car turning
before the boost is activated.
The Verdict
Checkpoint
Champion is a well put together little racer. It reminded me quite a bit
of the racers from the SNES days like Micro Machines and Rock 'n Roll
Racing. The only drawbacks are the sometimes wonky controls and
repetitive scenery. The game is free and although there are IAP, they
are not an annoyance and offer removing ads and unlocking skins and a
new vehicle. Free games don't get better than this.
