You got your Call of Duty in my Clash of Clans! That's basically the
premise of Activision's new mobile game Call of Duty: Heroes. Although
the game is a bit derivative, there is plenty of fun to be had here.
The Good
For
fans of the Call of Duty series, the game has plenty of homages and
characters returning. The gameplay is fun, and varied between troop
management and resource collection. There are plenty of upgrades and
different troops to keep things interesting as each building and troop
type has its own strengths and weakness to play out. The Alliance system
in which other players can come to your aid is actually a useful way to
include social interaction without making it feel forced.
The Bad
Although
there are quite a bit of Call of Duty references, players aren't going
to find much military realism here. Ranks like Lieutenant Corporal and
the like take some of the immersion of playing and it would have been
nice to see a little more care given to the details. There are also the
typical freemium cliches such as premium currency used to speed up
timers that can be annoying, especially for a game that seems to try to
ramp the action level up.
The Verdict
Call of Duty: Heroes
is a fun alternative to those who love Clash of Clans and the like.
Unfortunately, for Call of Duty fans, the experience isn't very action
packed due to the use of timers. However, if you're looking for a game
to only play for 5 to 10 minutes at a time on the go, you could do a lot
worse.
