Beep Games, comprised of industry veterans Ron Gilbert and Clayton Kauzlaric, has released Scurvy Scallywags for free on Android devices. The game was previously released on iOS for $1.99, where it enjoys a 4.5 out of 5 star review rating. The game is described as a musical match-three RPG, which asks gamers to collect treasure and reassemble a legendary sea shanty.
In each level, players make matches with three or more like-symbols, with the board then shifting the remaining pieces in the same direction of the swipe. This allows gamers to move their pirate around the board to compete against enemy characters, or to flee from them, depending on their current strength. Making matches with sword symbols increases the player's chance of success, and pirates level up over time to become even stronger.
Combat is handled automatically by the game once two characters are touching, and users collect treasure chests from fallen enemies. These can contain bonus gold piles, clothing items (which offer stat boosts), pieces to one of nine pirate ships (which also offer stat boosts), or verses to the sea shanty.
Outside of battle, players can spend their collected gold on power-ups, like the ability to swap tiles, or to shoot enemy characters without being directly next to them. Players can also sell the junk they've collected while playing, like excess coconuts and parrots, for bonus gold.
Scurvy Scallywags is available to download for free on Google Play.
