Kunundrum Review

Do you love puzzle games? Well here is a game that is sure to get your brain thinking. The game is titled Kunundrum. Now Kunundrum is not only a puzzle game, but it is one of those puzzle games that are rare and  you just can't seem to put down. Not only is the game good, and is it so hard but it just works so well, that has a very lasting quality just like Tetris. The game is simple sequence of the more and more challenging levels, which can be solved and restarted for as long as possible, but require using a minimum number of moves for a solution, to grant three stars. The point is always to bring a number of glowy spheres to their color-coded locations. Of course, the spheres only stop when they hit a wall, so the whole game is a quest to seek an optimal path for each of them, considering many different factors.
I must admit but when playing this game, it sometimes makes me feel like an idiot, but I do love it. Slide orb left into portal, momentum continues, orb goes into hole. Sounds so simple, but it isn't. Let's put a bunch of right angles in and make this guy super angry. It's the kind of frustrating fun that you get from doing logic puzzles, or from a platformer that you suck at and keep dying.
There are several mechanics that serve to further complicate the game process, like teleports, blocks that can be deactivated, and others. They are all fairly simple to understand, and when they are first introduced, it's easy to think that the game is going to be a piece of cake. However, the difficulty gets ramped up pretty fast, and suddenly, I find myself sitting for ten minutes, thinking over a level that could be completed in about ten moves. It's just that all of those moves have to be the right ones.
The graphics have been touted all over the place as "Tron-like". I think that's a really odd comparison/selling point. Sure, there's a neon glow to some of the graphics, but that isn't all the art is. They're tiles, and they have feelings. Why should they be grouped in with Tron? They want to have their own group! Like…Glowy Tiles. Yeah, has a nice ring to it. From now on, I'm referring to the graphics of Kunundrum as "Glowy Tiles". Don't get me wrong though, these Glowy Tiles are beautifully rendered. The neon isn't visually abrasive, and the tiles are small but manage to maintain decent detail.

The audio is a bit limited. I could only hear three audio tracks, all of which were fun to listen to. It's a shame, because the sound design is really funky: one of the tracks sounds almost techno/electric, and feels very eerie. The leitmotif can only be described as "spooky techno cave". The other track is just comprised of basic electric beats, and is very reminiscent of those space-themed puzzle games; it also sounds like it could fit in a Bewjeweled game. The last track gave a very spooky ambient vibe, and is the kind of stuff you'd hear in a space movie.
The gameplay in Kunundrum is absolutely incredible. It's the kind of stuff that's easy to grasp, but impossible to master. More than once I've been absolutely stumped but, "sometimes you have to just walk away from it, and come back to it later." And it works. You really need to think outside the box with this game. It rewards trying out moves that don't make sense or aren't obvious. It's a great way to exercise your brain. Doesn't hurt that it's crazy-addictive too.
