With Sega's re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the publisher managed to right the wrongs that plagued the previous mobile edition of the game. In addition to superior controls, the presentation is much closer to the original Genesis classic.
On that note, here are some tips that will help you get through the game.
How can I access the bonus rounds in Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
It works a bit differently than in the first game, where you simply reached the end of the stagewith a certain amount of coins and then jumped through a giant ring. This time around, you'll need to collect at least 50 coins - and still have them in your possession - and cross a checkpoint. Once you do, flashing lights will appear above it. Jump into the lights and you'll enter the special stage, where you run down 3D tunnels, collecting coins and avoiding mines.
How do I find Chaos Emeralds in Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
You'll need to successfully complete each bonus stage in three parts in order to acquire the Chaos Emeralds. The rings are scattered across each stage and are pretty easy to pick up, but keep in mind you'll lose them if you come into contact with any mines.
As you go through the stage, you'll come across a checkpoint, where you're required to have a minimal amount of rings, starting around 30 to 100. From there, you'll have a second goal to meet before reaching the next checkpoint, which can be anywhere from 70 to 190, depending on the Emerald. Finally, you'll need to reach the finish with another minimum, ranging from 130 to 220.
Successfully get all the required rings, and you'll have an Emerald waiting for you at the end.
How do I unlock the Hidden Palace Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
Yes. Oriignally intended to be released in the original 16-bit version, the level was scrapped midway through its development. A prototype version has since made the rounds over the years, but the level is finally included officially in both the iOS and Android editions. You'll need to gradually reach it by completing levels in the game, but it's worth the effort, especially for devoted Sonic fans.
How do I play as Tails or Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
Simple. When you start a new game, you'll have the opportunity to choose which character you want. If you prefer, you can even play with the classic Sonic/Tails combo, similar to the original Sega Genesis game.
Knuckles is worth trying out, though, and his glide ability makes it easy to hit enemies in mid-air.
How do I unlock Super Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
Becoming Super Sonic grants you impressive speed and invincibility (except from long falls), which is useful for running through levels. You must collect all the Chaos Emeralds for the transformation. Once you have them, start a level and collect 50 rings. Once you do, jump up in the air and you'll become Super Sonic. Let's see Tails try and keep up with you now.
How does the spin dash work in Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
The spin dash gives you a boost that will help you get up steep hills and around loops. Simply hold Down on the digital D-pad and press A, and Sonic will begin prepping his dash. Let go of the stick and he'll take off. If you want to keep his momentum going, hold the virtual D-pad in the direction that he's heading, and he should keep moving.
Does Tails actually do anything in Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
In the original version, he followed you like a fanboy. However, as a playable character in Sonic 2, he really does make a difference. He can hover in mid-air for several seconds, making it much easier to reach higher platforms than you could with other characters. Simply tap on the jump button in mid-air and he'll take flight. NOTE: he'll get tired after several seconds and descend back to Earth, so make the most from of his ability.
How does multiplayer work in Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
Multiplayer works like the original Genesis game, as you can compete against a friend through Game Center or Google Play on a variety of levels in split-screen format. Unfortunately, there's no local multiplayer option, and it can take a little while for a match to connect. Still, once it does, it's worth it.
