Asphalt Overdrive is a neon infused endless runner in the same vein as every other endless runner. The game is reminiscent of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, if you stripped all of the free-roaming violence, tethered your car to three lanes, and removed a large portion of fun.
Similar to previous Asphalt entries, Overdrive features cars based on actual machines – with the obvious inclusion of classic rides from the 80s and earlier. The graphics are pretty well done, complete with flashy lighting effects and speed blurs. It’s fine for what it is, but this is not a conventional arcade racer, so fans looking for a true racing fix will be disappointed.
And like most Gameloft games, Asphalt Overdrive uses the standard dual-currency model for car upgrades and extras, and the more useful gold bars are exceedingly rare during in-game play. It’s also energy-based, so be warned if you despise those types of games (I know I do, and for the matter, Hardcore Droid in general is adamantly against games that perpetually charge player to play, be warned.)
Really, Gameloft in general, in our humble estimation, has been slowly but surely spinning down the toilet in terms of giving their fans a fair deal. At least that’s our take on the once sound development house.
