The Good
Normally, a match-3 puzzle game does not have a story like this, but Spellfall mixes puzzle solving with various RPG elements to great effect. While matching various symbols, you battle different kinds of monsters. The bigger the chains, the more damage you do to your enemy. There is also a turn counter that winds down until you are counterattacked, which adds a unique element that you will not find in competing games. You character gains experience with each battle, and you receive coins that you can use to buy weapons and upgrade your character. The RPG elements make the game deeper than other puzzle games, giving you more reasons to play. The puzzle aspect is unique as well. You are not restricted in any moves that you make. Many puzzle games only allow you to move pieces into a certain column, row or grid, but in Spellfall, you can tap any piece and move it. This makes for different strategies. Do you go for quick strikes, or set up many chains while your enemy moves in for the kill?
The Bad
The in-app purchases are optional, but the game steers you towards buying them every chance it gets. In Spellfall, your life bar does not regenerate after each match. You can go into matches with low health, but after a few hits you are going to die. The only way to regenerate your health is to wait a certain amount of time or pay $0.99. This can be very annoying or expensive because usually you can only play two games before you need health. The weapon, tome and armor upgrades also cost a lot of gold, and it's hard to progress without the better weapons.
The Verdict
Spellfall is a unique and addicting puzzle game. Its only downside are the in-game purchases. If you can look past that, and have some patience, you'll have a great time.Download Spellfall for iPhone and iPad.
