Whether you like more visceral adventure or are content to go through the motions, these picks should make for some good weekend plays.
1. The Silent Age
The Silent Age is a luscious throwback that explores 1972, the Cold War, and the change that would eventually sweep everyone up in its cold embrace. You play Joe, a janitor who's tired of his tedious life. When a dying man comes to visit him one night, he receives a device that allows him to travel through time. Joe travels to the future to find that in 40 years, humanity will be extinct. It's up to Joe (and you) to figure out how to put a stop to this heinous prophecy, and it's a thrilling ride every step of the way.

2. Broken Sword: Director's Cut
The Broken Sword series is classic, and you can take the plunge by trying out the very first installement here with the Broken Sword: Director's Cut. Follow patent lawyer turned adventure George Stobbart, who becomes entangled in a world of intrigue and conspiracy while traveling through Paris. Be careful, though. When you finish this adventure you may just want to finish all the rest, too.

3. Gemini Rue
Gemini Rue is a popular adventure game amongst PC gamers already, and Wadjet Eye Games' neo-noir thriller takes everything exciting about the world of cyberpunk and weaves a gorgeous tale of an amnesiac named Delta Six who's trapped inside a mental institution. Fans of Beneath A Steel Sky will want to keep their eyes on this one, as it sports excellent writing, a gripping narrative, and a throwback aesthetic that has to be seen to be appreciated.

4. Simon the Sorcerer
Simon the Sorcerer is actually a classic Amiga game that '90s PC gamers will look back upon quite fondly. You're a muggle named Simon who finds himself whisked away into a land of whimsy, and it incorporates many of the classic adventure tropes from the LucasArts ScummVM titles with distinct British humor that brings the laughs. If you're looking for something a little more retro, this should fit the bill quite nicely.

5. The Room
The Room is as far removed from being conventional as possible, but it somehow manages to be one of the most gripping adventure experiences on this list. There's no one to talk to, no protagonist to get to know, and only one room available. But getting to the bottom of the game's central puzzle, an ornate box, requires a keen mind and a lot of patience. You won't even notice, though, once you're digging in.
