Hercules: The Official Game Review

Summer is a time for BBQs, the beach and going to the movies. With the latter, many blockbuster films produce video game tie-ins. That said, Hercules: The Official Game accompanies the newly released movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

The Good

Hercules: The Official Game takes the likeness of Dwayne Johnson and puts him into the game. In it, you control Hercules as you battle many different foes. You fight baddies by swiping your finger across the screen to swing your weapon. You can deflect enemy attacks by swiping in the right direction to counter, or you can use the block button, but you have a stamina meter, and once that runs out, blocking won't work anymore. Hercules also has a rage attack that can help turn the tide of any battle; all you need to do is follow the on-screen prompts.
Hercules can be outfitted with new and better equipment. After defeating enemies, you receive money that can used to buy new gear as well as upgrading your current weapons and armor, which is a nice plus.

The Bad

Hercules: The Official Game gets repetitive pretty quickly. As a hack and slash game, there is not much strategy involved while trying to play, and after a while, all the battles feel like the same thing. In addition, there is not much distinction in most of the enemies you fight. There are bosses at the end of each storyline, but other foes look and fight the same aside from having different weapons.
Finally, the game runs on an energy system. With each battle, a bar gets used up. Once the bar runs out, you have to wait a certain amount of time until you are allowed to go into the next battle. This is just a means to prolong a game that is not very deep.

The Verdict

Movie tie-in games have a rocky history. Many of these titles turn out mediocre or worse because they are rushed to coincide with the release of the movie. Hercules: The Official Game is good for a short while, but does nothing to change the bad stigma that many movie video games have.
