Favorite Retro-Inspired iOS Games

PC_FORMAT_ILLO
Recent years have seen a revival of the wonderful pixel art stylings from retro video games. Indie developers have released some of iOS's most unique, fun, and colorful games following this art direction and we here at Modojo would love to share some of our absolute favorites.

Pix'n Love Rush

This fast paced platforming game has players taking the role of a manic pixilated cat in the attempt to beat the high score. Shooting bats, picking up coins and and watching the remaining time will net points, the unique design kicks in every 10-15 seconds though as the background changes and player will have to keep up or risk a game over.
Available in the App Store for $.99

Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery EP

This point and click adventure features some of the most beautiful pixel graphics on the iPhone. Although it is a bit slow paced, players can expect to be enthralled by the moving story, wonderful soundtrack, and exceptional amount of polish given to this game.
Available in the App Store for $4.99

Game Dev Story

Players aim to create and manage the most successful video game company in the world in this adorable sim. While the gameplay is a bit simplistic, I kept holding on for just one more year to see if my studio could create just one more bestseller.
Available in the App Store for $4.99

Terraria

This pint sized version of the hit indie game holds up well. In this side-scrolling action RPG players must build shelter and try to survive the harsh land they find themselves in. This game is great for those looking for a Minecraft-type experience on the go as the side scrolling controls are quite a bit easier to handle on mobile.
Available in the App Store for $4.99

Canabalt

This great platform/endless runner combines a pixellated art style, monochrome color pallet, and tight gameplay in which players must run continuously to escape the aliens that have invaded Earth.
Available in the App Store for $2.99
