I cannot believe that it has been 15 years ago since the game Snake was introduced onto cell phones, the first being Nokia in 1998.
15 years does seem like a long time, but Snake has been around longer than 15 years. In the mid-70’s Snake had a variety of games that date way back to the classic arcade
game Blockade, where it was first introduced, then in the late 70’s
made its way to the Atari home console, where the named was changed to
Surround. Snake been on different systems and had gone through name changes here and there, but the game it had always been the same.
The objective of the game is to control your snake around the room while feeding it food, as you eat your tail grows longer. And as you are doing this you have to avoid hitting the walls and eating
your own tail, this make this part of the game increasingly difficult.
To control your snake you would press 2, 6, 8, and 4 to make it go up,
right, down, and left respectively.
The look was there, as well as the “beep” sound, and gameplay, but it
just felt a little awkward playing on a touch-screen phone but I
eventually got used to it. I’m so used to hold the Nokia phone while I had my thumbs at the ready on the 2, 6, 8, and 4 buttons. To put it in other words it was like trying to play Super Mario Bros, with a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 controller feels awkward at first but with time get used to it.
Now whether you download the
Snake ’97, Classic Snake ’97 or Classic Snake 2 version, they all have
the same extras. I just wonder why there’s the ’97, Snake didn’t come
onto the Nokia till ’98.
Some of the extra include changing the background of the phone; you can play on the Nokia 3310, 3210, or the 5190. As well there are two modes of play where you can choose to have you snake go through walls or not.
Playing this classic game is just like I remembered; fun, addicting,
and at times frustrating. I also remember putting endless hours into
this game, trying my best to beat my friends score, or my own. Not only did Snake remind of the endless hours wasted but how a long way cell phone games came and evolved.
This classic game is free at the Google Play Store. Enjoy!
