Blocky Roads Review

Now I would have never would have admitted this before, but I am addicted to the game Minecraft, and I love racing games (if done right). And when you combine the blocky world of Minecraft, and a racing game, you get a game simply titled Blocky Roads. This is a game that is developed by DogByte Games. And much to my surprise this is an actually pretty additive game with a whole lot of charm.
Blocky Roads tells the tale of a one-block headed farmer, who has lost his farm, house, pigs, and even his tractor, to a terrible tornado. And it is your job to find parts of the farm through completing races filled with treasure chests and coins. Each time you hit a milestone in a race you'll get a treasure chest which contains a piece of the farm. The parts vary from trees and pigs to clothing and new cars as the tornado didn't leave a whole lot behind.
There is a total of 12 races, and each of them will have 3 treasure cheats spread out through out the course. I really love the controls in this game, because they are simple. Right thumb to accelerate, and left thumb to brake.
blocky-roads-iphone-03Thanks to some incredibly deft physics and supporting systems, that's all you need. When accelerating, your vehicle leans back on its suspension. Braking has the opposite effect, and both effects can be carried through when in the air. And you don't have to worry about pulling off stunts which I like, because the real challenge here is keeping your vehicle upright and in one piece as physics comes into play and the tracks are full of hazards like massive hills and lava pits. If you take too much damage (or flip over) you'll have to restart, and you also have to keep an eye on the gas gauge at all times.
When you first play Blocky Roads, you feel that you will not finish the first level, you'll find out that your vehicle will flip over to easily, or you will find yourself unable to scale a steep hill, or you will run out of fuel before you get to the next gas tank. But at every failed run will provide you with more money to upgrade your vehicle, thus boosting your chances. And when you do get to the finish line, it really feels like a triumph.
Blocky Roads offers up 9 different vehicles to go along with one spot for a customized ride. Designing your blocky vehicle is easy, and all your old rides can painted as well. I'm not sure how many outfits there are yet, but there seem to be quite a few as I've unlocked several different pieces for men and women and am only a little over halfway through the game. Needless to say, you'll get plenty of play time out of Block Roads.
Blocky Roads is simple, fun, and very addictive game. The physics are spot-on, and keeping your favorite vehicle upright becomes challenging as you progress through the game. This is a free game that is great for all ages, and it is worth it to check out.
