Back to Bed iPhone Review

Back to Bed is a surreal puzzler that draws inspiration from the likes of M.C. Escher and Salvador Dali, and thus looks absolutely fantastic. And while it's quirky enough and strange enough to get into if you're looking for something off the beaten path, it's simply not that unique once you get past its weird veneer.

The Good
Bob is asleep, and you act as his guardian named Subob, which looks like a four-legged furry creature with a man's face. You have to keep him from harm no matter what, and Bob often finds himself falling off platforms to his death and returning to the position he was in when he fell. You're tasked with ensuring Bob stays on a safe path. Of course, Bob doesn't always cooperate. Sometimes he even turns around to start down a new path. That's when you have to re-evaluate the situation and ensure Bob is going where he needs to.
There are over 30 puzzling levels to complete as well as a nightmare mode that allows you to challenge yourself even further,

The Bad
Back to Bed simply isn't that difficult of a game, nor is that engaging despite its dreamlike visuals. It looks like it could deliver a surreal adventure, but really it's just a grid-based endeavor that, unfortunately, has little in the way of replay value. There's also no reward for completing a level quickly or getting through it more intelligently than the game might have expected you to, so you can leisurely stroll through the game and do whatever you want to do, lending a rather bland feel to it.
The Verdict
Back to Bed is practically oozing with visual charm, but it can't back it up with weak gameplay and a lack of replay value. Perhaps the developers should have slept on it a bit longer.
