Now when you first look at the title screen you’ll probably notice that it might be similar to Sony’s “Wipeout” on how it has the futuristic theme and futuristic looking cars, but so did F-Zero for the SNES, but mind you gamers, while looks can be deceiving Delta V racing is not Wipeout. Delta V racing does have some element of the SNES’ “F-Zero”, and not to mention Super Mario Kart terms as picking up power-ups. And instead of the now traditionally used 3D view, this racing game has a 2D view. Though you may think that 2D is old and obsolete, the good folks at “SPACEHOPPER STUDIOS” did a nice job at making it work really well.
This being a racer game it is your objective to get your ship to the finish line first. And you will have to race down the track with other racers, while avoiding colliding into walls. Of course there are boost pads to help gain the lead, and if you happen to lose it, there are different weapons such as missiles, machine guns, lasers, and mines, .to help you take down the other racers so you can get back that first place lead. And all the weapons can be easily activated with just a simple tap of your finger.
You have four tournaments; The Rookie challenge, Amateur, Semi-Pro, and Pro each of the 4 tournament have 9 levels. They will have the standard races, time attacks, and boss fights. The one the really got my attention was the “Sectors” challenge. Your objective in this challenge is; you have to race down the track for a long as possible without hitting the walls. Easy as it may seem, it’s actually quite challenging. The trick to doing well in this challenge is to slowly take your time avoiding the boost pads and walls altogether while trying to go through the deceleration pads. To unlock the other tournaments like Amateur, Semi-Pro, and Pro you’ll need to have a certain amount of points by winning medals, each medal has points; gold has 3 points, silver has 2, and bronze has 1. You can replay a level until you have achieved the gold.
Since the game has a 2D view, the controlling of the ship is just a matter of sliding your finger up and down to avoid walls, to go through boost pads, and to pick up power ups. The tracks themselves look like long corridors, with back grounds that kind of look like they were pulled from the movie Tron, or from NES games like “Gradius”, and “Mega Man”. The game also has bit of heart-pumping club music and cool robot sound effects as you are picking up power-ups.
I love how Delta V racing is integrated well with Google Play Game Services achievements and leaderboards, so that you can see and keep track of how you are doing with your friends and with others. And I would have loved if the game had more ships to choose from and having the ability to upgrade your ship would have been a nice addition too.
Delta V racing has the element of what other racers had in the past “good ole fun”. There are 36 events to keep you hooked on for a while. But I still would have loved to have upgradeable ships. Having the 2D view reminds me of some Atari racer games that I used to play. This is still a fun game to play, with just the use of your finger. Delta V racing is $0.99 at the Google play store, so download this game to your Android device today. Happy Gaming Gamers!
